Name Badges

Hi Everyone:

I’m enclosing a PDF file of everyone who has ordered a badge(s). If you have ordered one please find your name on the list and check for any errors.

1. Is Your Call Sign Right? Check for VE and VA.
2. Is Your Name Spelled Right? Some people wanted full names and others only first. Check to make sure I have that right. I did ask about long names and I was told they will reduce the font size in order to get the full name in.
3. Is the pin and/or magnet info right? Pin is $5.00, Magnet is $7.50 plus tax and shipping.
4. If the info I have is right, you don’t have to do anything.
5. If the info is wrong or I don’t have your name down email me by Friday, June 7 with any corrections or omissions. The order will be sent in Saturday June 8. If I don’t hear from you by Friday and there are errors YOU PAY AND KEEP!

Payment:
Just to keep everything simple we will pay the total amount and you can pay when you pick up your badge. I will check to see if we can save the shipping by having somebody go out and get them.

Field Day
At last nights meeting, Darrel started a list of operators for field day. If your planning on attending FD and want to operate, can you please send Darrel an email to darrels@me.com and let him know your coming and which bands and modes you intend to operate and if your bringing equipment. The club will have the Yaesu grab and go kit available for use. Sorry, the KX3 has already been spoken for.

Harris Barn Special Event Station
The special event station is September 7. We have chosen the Harris Barn as our theme for this years special event station. If you haven’t put down your name yet, please email me and let me know. This is going to be a real fun day. As you know all were asking is for you to operate on what bands & modes you desire and work only as many hours as you can. The big plus is you can work from where ever you happen to be that day. It just doesn’t get any simpler then that. We have about 10 members already committed for the project and we aim to get around 90% of the club involved. Chris will be getting a web page started around mid June and one of the reasons were asking for an early sign up is participating call signs will be listed on the web page to give others an idea of who to look for. This is a great opportunity for our out of town members, or members on holidays to get involved. Why not form a small group and go to a park and operate. Keep in mind the Yaesu and KX3 kits will be available for use.

Under 20 Club
Sunday night at 7:30pm on 28.020. A good way to brush up on your cw. The operators will only send at your speed. Monitor the repeater and ask away if you have a question or comment.

Name Tags
We are in the process of ordering name tags for any club member who desires one. These tags will be 1″ x 3″ with a blue background with white lettering. Our DARS logo is on the left side of the tag. The price is $5 with a pin on the back or $7.50 with a magnetic back. Taxes & S/H extra. Your call sign will be on the top line and your name below that. I have taken names over the last two meetings. If you want one and haven’t signed up over the last two meetings please send me an email gdick@telus.net and let me know your call sign, name (whether you want your full name or just first name) and whether a pin or magnetic back. It is the top example we will be going with. I will be placing the order in about a weeks time so don’t delay if you want one.

Thursday May 30 meeting

Hi Everyone: The meeting tonight is at North Delta. For those not there last week I will explain the name badge project and you can put your name down if you wish one. With Field Day roughly a month away maybe we can have a discussion on where we stand and what still needs to be done. We are still looking for members to sign up for the special event station on September 7. With June right around the corner tables are now available for ComFest on September 29. No change in price, still only $20. Hopefully we will see you tonight at 7.

Burnaby Radio

Hello fellow amateur radio operators.

As you may or may not know W.W.(Bill)Slaughter (VE7CIM/VE7WS) of Burnaby Radio Communications Ltd had passed away May 18 2013. Bill had opened the store for 20+ years ago to support the commercial and amateur radio community. Bill was 73 and had been fighting a medical ailment for some time.

As many of you know I have been helping Bill part time for around 3 years with sales and repairs. The store will be open in June after the Sea-PAC Hamfest. Please be patient as this will be a huge undergoing for me.

Burnaby Radio will be open on June 8-9 2013 for fellow hams to pay there last respects and tell stories on how Bill got them into radio (hihi). This will be a two day event as many out of town guys would like to come.

Thanks
Mike Wong

We were shown a new antenna analyzer last night which Tom took home and is playing with. Early reports show this will be a worthwhile item to have available to members. Will get Tom’s final report next Thursday and go from there.

*********************
If you have time on Sunday, don’t forget the under 20 club at 19:30 (7:30 pm) on 28.020. More the merrier. Keep in mind our repeater system is being monitored during the under 20 club so if your feeling a bit lost or over whelmed, get on the repeater and let one of the other members help you out.

Our special event station is moving right along for September 7. This is showing all the signs of being one fun day. We have ten operators so far that have signed up (VE7AHT, VE7FKY, VA7TU, VA7QLT, VA7CI, VE7PKE, VE7LEE, VE7BGD, VE7TJF & VE7JWS.) If I have missed you please email me again and if you haven’t signed up yet send me a note. By mid June we should have a webpage up and running explaining all the details. In order to participate you have to be a DARS member in good standing and you can operate as many hours as you wish. Band and mode of your choice. It just doesn’t get any simpler then that. Chris is working on some fun things for webpage for that day. Stay tuned!!

VE7WLF sent out earlier today looking for more volunteers for the Ladner Days Parade on May 26 and the Walk Run & Roll event on June 2. If your able to help out consult the earlier emails that were sent out or email: ve7wlf@gmail.com

As you can see we can still use more operators. If I have missed anyone on the above list please let me know.
HELP PLEASE! – FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT POSSIBLY BE INTERESTED IN JOINING US. ANNOUNCEMENTS ON NETS, CLUB MEETINGS, NEWSLETTERS, WEBSITES ETC. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Assignments will include such things as assembly area, judging, shuttle buses, police, with various Hyack and parade officials, P.A. announcer, dispersal etc. The parade committee also counts on us for communication at many of the intersections along the parade route and would appreciate any help we can provide with the actual manning of the traffic.

Operators assigned to the assembly area and parade officials will start communications at 08:00 and those assigned to points along the parade route will start a little later. The event starts at 10:30 with the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team and the parade follows. We are usually all done by around 13:00.

As always, new hams are very welcome. No experience is necessary, we can certainly buddy up any brand new hams with an experienced operator. All that is required is a 2 metre handheld (and hopefully a spare battery!)

I will of course supply further details as the event draws closer.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Ken Clarke

We had a look at the completed Elecraft KX3 last night. Early reports from VE7PKE and VE7AHT are giving it a 6 star rating out of 5. VE7PKE reports that it only took him a couple of hours to put it together and although still in early testing VE7AHT reports that although there is a bit of a learning curve involved the radio works like a charm. He has made a contact into Europe (I believe) and Brazil. The Brazilian station said is audio was very good. Will report more as the two Dave’s play more.

********************
Darrel reported last night that we have been approached by the Tour De Delta to help them out with communications this year. The event will be in Tsawwassen only. In the near future Darrel will be going to a meeting and we should know more after that. Sunday July 7 will be the dated we are required so please keep that in the back of your minds when planning your July. We will keep you informed.

Dave (AHT) and myself brought everybody up to date on the special event station Sept 7. Every contact qualifies for a QSL card, 3 contacts qualifies for a special downloadable certificate. We are still looking for members to sign up. It can’t be any easier on you then this. Operate from wherever you happen to be that day, as many hours as you can spend and on what HF bands and modes you decide. Just email me and let me know you want to participate and we will put you on the list. We have around 10 already signed up and our goal is to be around the 100% . This promises to be a real fun event. Please consider getting involved.

A fellow ham who I know quite well was in touch with me with a request.

“Would anyone have a 80’+ tower? A local ham is looking for high towers on which to conduct practice climbs in order to build skill for a future tower project.”

If you have a tower that high and are willing to let him practice please email me and I will forward it on. Know a fellow ham who has the tower height let them know.

Ken, VE7BC needs help

Hello,

The New Westminster Hyack International Parade is on Saturday May 25. Operators assigned to the assembly area and parade officials will start communications at 08:00 and those assigned to points along the parade route will start a little later. The event starts at 10:30 with the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team and the parade follows. We are usually all done by around 13:00.

I am in need of about 25 operators. Assignments will include such things as assembly area, judging, shuttle buses, police, with various Hyack and parade officials, P.A. announcer, dispersal etc. The parade committee also counts on us for communication at many of the intersections along the parade route and would appreciate any help we can provide with the actual manning of the traffic barricades.

Please let me know whether you will able to help. May 25 is only 3 weeks away. I know how much the Hyack Association appreciates our services.
