Harris Barn Special Event Station

A big thank you to all who turned on a radio and participated in the Harris Barn Special Event Station yesterday. It was truly an over whelming success from the organizers point of view. From emails I received as the day went along I know some of you were having a lot of issues with getting out. Some more then others. From my ham chair I started at 8am and was starting to wonder if I was going to have issues. I was on 20m and made a couple of SSB contacts but it seemed that I wasn’t getting out as the contacts were few and far between. Went to PSK and the waterfall had stations on but again very little success. I thought this was going to be a trying day. Decided go give 15m a try and couldn’t believe it. Hardly saw anyone on the waterfall but the contacts just kept coming. Even had a small pile up at one point.

But the real success story isn’t in the amount of contacts made but the comments we were receiving. Both Dave (VE7AHT) and myself were comparing notes as the day went on and we were both surprised by many contacts thanking DARS for doing this special event station and helping to keep HF alive. (Keeping HF alive was an actual comment) Those comments I wasn’t expecting. My macro for PSK had our web address on it and the amount of contacts who were looking up our web address while we were in contact and commenting on the great job Chris did on the site was unbelievable.

Once again from the organizers of Harris Barn Special Event Station

Thank You!

Harris Barn Handbook

Believe it or not the Harris Barn special event station is this Saturday. For all the talking and planning the big day is now fast approaching. We have put together a small handbook that should answer all your questions about what to do on Saturday. I’m sending this to all members. If you haven’t signed up but have decided you would like to get involved in some way your more then welcome. Turn on your radio and get involved.

Once you have finished for the day, please count the number of contacts you have made and email the count to me. Once we have purchased the required amount of QSL cards we will have an instruction sheet out on how to handle your logs.

If you have any questions about the handbook or something we have overlooked, please send me an email and ask away.

Hoping to hear you on the air on Saturday.

Per last nights discussion on the 50,000/10,000 watt AM Radio transmitter proposal for Point Roberts if you would like to voice an opinion the email address is: sbosman@co.whatcom.wa.us
If you plan on submitting a comment you should do it today (Friday, August 16) as this is the last day. Although the email says any submissions received after the 16th will go into the public record for consideration of the final decision, as Ralph said do it now before you forget.

The special event station is only a couple of weeks away. We pretty well have all the pieces of the puzzle put into place. I could use one volunteer to put together a small fact sheet on the barn that we can distribute to all the operators for reference on the day of the event. This should take less then an hour to do. If you can help out please email me. This promises to be a fun event for all members so if you haven’t gotten your name down let me know ASAP. We are listing all the call signs that will be active that day on the website so hams will have an idea of who to look for. Get your name in now. Check the website: http://deltaamateurradio.com/hb/ and if you signed up but don’t see your call sign listed let me know so we can get it added on.

ComFest 2013 is just around the corner. We had confirmation last night that the Lions will be running the food this year. For the first time in ComFest’s history we will be offering a Pancake Breakfast starting around 8:00 am. Thanks to VE7CFF for arranging this. If you need a table to sell some of your old treasures email me and I will get you on the list. gdick@telus.net

Thursday August 15 Meeting

Hi Everyone:

The meeting tonight is in Tsawwassen. A bit of news plus I got an interesting email today we might like to discuss especially with the technical folks of the club. Seems there is a group in Point Roberts upset about a 50,000 watt radio transmitter going in close to the border. It has been approved by the FCC. According to the email this could disrupt amateur frequencies in the Tsawwassen area. The writer of the email not only has addressed his email to us but the mayor, SD MLA, police and fire chiefs. Hopefully some of the teckie people will be there tonight to get their take on the situation. The email does say the idea of the station is much like KVOS TV, they are directly looking for a Canadian audience more so then an American one.

Hope to see you at 7
Gord

You might remember a couple of years ago we had a couple of visits from Roberto YS1RS. He sends along the following:

Hello guys.

Just a short note to let you know I have uploaded a new series of small videos on YouTube.
Aimed not to the seasoned Ham Radio operators but aimed to those who have interest in Radio and would like become Ham Radio Operators.
Always with a simple language and a small camera.
Not much technology on the making of the videos and without preparation but casual as you will see…
Trying to promote this great hobby.

>
> Tonight I spoke to the club about and article in August QST regarding a DIY Bluetooth headset adapter. For more detail you must really read the article.
> For about $75 in parts you can make an adapter that you can use to connect a bluetooth headset to a receiver or a transceiver. Several of the parts have a reduced price if we can get several people together to make a bulk purchase of the parts. I have three people interested to date. If you are interested please confirm your interest by next Friday (August 16) and we can proceed ahead. If you have read the article and have questions drop me an email atve7pke@gmail.com We could do it a club project or not. I am willing to give anyone a hand if they need some help building it. Thanks Dave VE7PKE

> Gord, that about all I have to say about Bluetooth. DID, AHT and I are going to build some. If other want to join that’s fine.
