Thursday June 27 Meeting

Hi Everyone:
The meeting tonight is at North Delta. We will talk about field day for a bit and then upcoming events.

from the desk of VA7IQ

Don / VA7IQ is starting to rebuild his station and needs to give away a 5′ computer table (27″ wide) in order to make room.

The table is brown laminate with rubber edging and in good shape (1 ding on the top). It is well suited for sitting at a radio or computer on one side. It’s a solid table, capable of holding valuable radio equipment without falling apart. I’ve used it for several years for my HF station setup.

This is a FREEBIE table, and will go to whoever wants it and will come and get it (sorry – no deliveries). The table will probably be disassembled, which will help in it’s transport.

Please call me at 604-943-4754.

Subject: 2013 Celebration of Light

The Celebration of Light is just over a month away. This year this does
take place on July 27th, July 31 and August 3rd.

All of you did participate in 2012, if you are available for this year’s
event, it is shaping up to be a fairly good one. Please feel free to
circulate this request to others who may be interested in coming out.

This event does take the better part of a month to put it together. If you
are available for any or all three of the nights please let me know, if you
have a favorite spot on the beach or would like to try one of the leadership
positions, I would like to know this as well. If you could send me an email
at jim.forsyth@vectorradio.ca , I would appreciate it.

Cheers,

Alberta Flooding and Amateur Radio

As of yesterday at 10:00 PDT the amateur radio folks in Alberta stood down. I can tell you there are a lot of tired hams who dedicated many hours to the floods there. I would like to share with you the email I received from VE6KGA in Edmonton yesterday.

> On behalf of ARES members in Alberta, I want to thank all of you for your
> understanding and offers of assistance. During the emergency DSTAR was
> our only link into Canmore. As the events of the weekend unfolded, the
> Provincial Operations Center tasked us with coming up with secondary and
> tertiary comms. While HF worked intermittently and, yes I know DSTAR
> relies on the infrastructure, it did work, was the clearest comms we had
> and traffic was passed.
>
> We needed XRF021B mostly because the repeaters to be used were on there
> already on a perminant basis and the operators at all ends were complete
> rubies in the DSTAR world and would not have been able to reconnect.
> Training during an emergency was not an option
>
> Moving forward DSTAR equipment will become standard in the POC in Alberta.
> With that will be the training necessary to switch to a different
> reflector will be provided as well as step by step instructions that could
> be relayed to remote sites.
>
> Kerry Atkinson VE6GG (VE6KGA)
> Emergency Coordinator, Edmonton ARES

In talking with Kerry yesterday, to his knowledge this was the first time in North America that DSTAR was used for priority traffic as well as health and welfare. The HF was a constant relay and as he said it worked intermittently at best. If your not aware Alberta does have a VHF backbone through most of the province. Kerry said although technically it did work 100% it was often difficult to understand. As Kerry points out DSTAR was there clearest communications they had.

The hoop la that took place Friday night when the request came in for xrf021b was a real eye opener both for Kerry and myself. The request came in approx. 1 hr. prior to start of the CanNet. xrf21b had already been hooked up to another reflector to give world wide reception. We were kinda stuck that we couldn’t move the emergency traffic to xrf21c and it was too late to unlink the second reflector. The CanNet ops for the night (myself and VE3AJB) offered stoppage of the net if they needed the reflector. Both Kerry and myself have proposed changes to the “brains” of free star on how to make this more efficient moving forward.

Field Day 2013

Hi Everyone:

Now that Field Day 2013 is in the books and its either a bunch of high fives or whimpering in your beer for amount of contacts made, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all DARS members to thank Darrel (VE7CUS) for all his efforts in organizing this year field day event. For those of our members who either operated or just came out for a visit, they found they had a wonderful time.

As you know the intent of Field Day is an exercise to show in case of an emergency we can deploy and setup without plugging the equipment into a socket somewhere. As some of you were aware this year’s field day was both that exercise and emergency exercise rolled into one. On Friday, talking with a friend in Edmonton about the flooding situation I made the offer if we could lend assistance call me. He said he might take us up on the offer. Although we weren’t called upon, we had two or three stations at the field day site and one station offsite monitoring VE7SUN DSTAR repeater in case we were needed.

I saw cameras being clicked all over the place and in the coming days we will make sure Chris gets the pics and we will get a selection on the web for all to see.

Thanks again Darrel for all your hard work and we look forward to field day 2014.

>> The Quarter Century Wireless Association Dogwood Chapter 98 is sponsoring an amateur radio history exhibition at the Burnaby Village Museum. We will be teaching and demonstrating cw (morse code), crystal radios, restoring and repairing older ham gear, and operating VE7QCW each Wednesday in July and August. We are looking for donations of cw keys and code practice oscillators that will not be returned as the condition can not be guaranteed after several thousand visitors have tried to pound out the code! We are also looking for older tube or hybrid radios that are ready to be scrapped to be able to show the inside of older gear and restoration techniques. All amateurs are welcome to visit and operate this summer. The theme of the Burnaby Village Museum is RADIO and we want to be sure visitors know the major role amateur radio has played in the development of radio. Other clubs please copy this ad.

It is a Beautiful Thing !
My Favorite Field Day Photos !

Best viewed full screen…

Several Weeks before Field Day, and during the complete
overhaul of a Cushcraft A4S Tri-band Yagi, to be used at
Field Day 2011, I asked WA7OYI – Richard who was also working
on the antenna, if he would ride with me to the Arlington Airport,
to find a ultra-light pilot who we could talk into a fly by of the
W7PIG Field day site to shoot a couple aerial photographs.

Dick said “Leave it to me ! I have a friend !”

These aerial photographs were shot by Arnold Marler, a
life long friend of WA7OYI – Dick Arnett… Arnold took off
from the Arlington Airport flying his powered parachute
style ultralight with the sole intent to photo document the
SCARC – W7PIG 2011 Field Day Event…

Thank You Arnold !
You have provided a life long memory for me ! N7MZ

WB0RUR reports the American government has finally stopped eavesdropping on our QSO’s with American hams.

By WBØRUR, on the scene

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia; June 13, 2013 – As news headlines across the country report on the National Security Administration’s controversial cellular telephone and email data collection efforts, the United States’ top high frequency monitoring service is disbanding a little-known program designed to listen in and record data related to ham radio QSOs.

In a classified filing sent to a Congressional oversight committee, the Secret Commission against Airwaves Terrorism (SCAT) says OPERATION RAGCHEW is being stopped immediately. All federal OPERATION RAGCHEW employees are being reassigned to new duties, all receiving equipment is being sold on eBay, and the office coffee pot is being sent over to Human Resources. All collected data is being shredded and dumped in the Pacific Ocean to form a new coral reef near the Solomon Islands. (Note: look for this “atoll” to become a new DXCC entity in the near future.)

An insider (not authorized to speak publicly) tells Ham Hijinks that the whole mess was a disastrous fiasco.

“It seemed like a great idea when it was authorized,” says Mr. X, who declines to be identified. “We listened and recorded key details on thousands of amateur radio communications; both domestic and international. But later, after the security specialists analyzed the first quarter data, we discovered it was a huge waste of time. Seriously. Nothing of value.”

After hours of investigative reporting, Ham Hijinks has uncovered the top 10 most often recorded conversation topics reported by OPERATION RAGCHEW to the Congressional committee.

Tropical Storm Andrea begins to lose it’s strength*
2013-06-06

At 10:43pm NT (2013-06-06), Tropical Storm Andrea made landfall over Northern Florida and is already undergoing extratropical transition and likely will not severly impact the Maritimes.

As it tracks near Long Island Friday night, no significant impacts on Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are expected.

We will keep you posted as we begin the 2013 Hurricane Season.
