Special Event Station: Harris Barn – September 7

A special event station will be held on September 7. We have chosen the Harris Barn as our theme for this year’s event. The Harris Barn is a heritage building which has been restored and relocated with a grand opening on May 29 (Read the full story here).

Details still need to be finalised. Every contact qualifies for a QSL card, 3 contacts qualifies for a special downloadable certificate. We are still looking for members to sign up. It can’t be any easier on you then this. Operate from wherever you happen to be that day, as many hours as you can spend and on what HF bands and modes you decide. Just email Gord if you want to participate and we will put you on the list. We have around 10 already signed up and our goal is to be around the 100% . This promises to be a real fun event. Please consider getting involved.

If you haven’t put down your name yet, please email Gord. We have about 10 members already committed for the project and we aim to get around 90% of the club involved. This is a great opportunity for our out of town members, or members on holidays to get involved. Why not form a small group and go to a park and operate. Keep in mind the Yaesu and KX3 kits will be available for use.

Tour De Delta – July 7

We have been approached by the Tour De Delta to help them out with communications this year. The event will be in Tsawwassen only. Sunday July 7 will be the dated we are required so please keep that in the back of your minds when planning your July. We will keep you informed.

New Westminster Hyack International Parade – Saturday May 25

The New Westminster Hyack International Parade is on Saturday May 25. Operators assigned to the assembly area and parade officials will start communications at 08:00 and those assigned to points along the parade route will start a little later. The event starts at 10:30 with the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team and the parade follows. We are usually all done by around 13:00.

I am in need of about 25 operators. Assignments will include such things as assembly area, judging, shuttle buses, police, with various Hyack and parade officials, P.A. announcer, dispersal etc. The parade committee also counts on us for communication at many of the intersections along the parade route and would appreciate any help we can provide with the actual manning of the traffic barricades.
Please let me know whether you will able to help. May 25 is only 3 weeks away. I know how much the Hyack Association appreciates our services.

HELP PLEASE! – FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT POSSIBLY BE INTERESTED IN JOINING US. ANNOUNCEMENTS ON NETS, CLUB MEETINGS, NEWSLETTERS, WEBSITES ETC. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

As always, new hams are very welcome. No experience is necessary, we can certainly buddy up any brand new hams with an experienced operator. All that is required is a 2 metre handheld (and hopefully a spare battery!)
I will of course supply further details as the event draws closer.
Thanks in advance for your help,

Third Annual Laura Szendrei Walk, Run ‘n’ Roll – June 2

On September 25, 2010 a beautiful Saturday afternoon, 15-year-old Laura Szendrei was brutally attacked in Mackie Park, North Delta. Laura subsequently died of her injuries.

The Third Annual Laura Szendrei Walk, Run ‘n’ Roll will take place June 2, 2013. The event begins and ends at Burnsview School on 112 Street, North Delta. While details have not yet been provided by the organizers, operators should plan to be in place from 0800 to 1200. Our main area of concern will be the Bog Trail parallel to the railroad tracks at the bottom of the ridge. In the past we have paired with another volunteer from the event. I would prefer to see no less than two of our people together.

If you can assist in the communications support event, please contact Doug.

Ladner May Days Parade – May 26

Sunday activities kick-off with a pancake breakfast followed at noon by the May Days Parade featuring the May Queen float. The 1.5 mile parade route leads through the heart of historic Ladner Village and culminates at the stage in Memorial Park where the traditional May Pole Dance and May Queen Crowning Ceremony take place.

The parade steps off at noon and although our times are not yet finalized, expect to be on hand for your assignments at 10:00. Come early and enjoy the pancake breakfast!

Newbie Open House

Saturday May 4, 10am – 1 pm
North Delta Public Safety Building
11375 – 84th Ave., Delta
(plenty of free parking in the large lot at the rear)

Open to all newly licensed amateurs and those who would like a
refresher course. The open house is divided into three parts:

  1. the basics of getting onto HF
  2. the basics of VHF/UHF (bring your handheld if you have one.)
  3. emergency preparedness

Each section takes about an hour and you may select which ones
you wish to attend. Each section will be repeated in the second
hour so you can mix and match. The third hour you can mingle and
ask questions. This is a hands on experience. By the time you
leave you should feel comfortable with a radio.

The Delta Amateur Radio Society
looks forward to meeting and talking with you at our open house.
Hope to see you there!

Mark September 7 on your Calendars

Hi Everyone:

As you know we have been talking about doing a special event station for awhile now.

I am happy to report that Saturday September 7 has been selected as the date. More details will follow very shortly as confirmations are made.
We are asking you to signup and commit to participating in this event. This is an HF event and it will the simplest one you probably have ever been involved with.

You may participate if you are a DARS member in good standing and you can….
1. work from home, NDPSB, vacation spot, go to a park. In other words anywhere you want. Great for our out of town members. 2. work as many hours as you wish
3. work whatever mode you want.

For those who can commit this far out please email me and let me know you will participate. The early commitment helps with our plans for qsl cards, certificates, promotion etc. We will keep you posted as details become available.
