D-RATS Exercise March 2 – 8

Hi Everyone:

I’m starting the first D-RATS Exercise next week. This exercise you can do from the leisure of your own home and at your own time frame. Can’t get any easier then that. If you wish to participate please reply to this email with the call sign you will be using.

I will send out the instructions later this week and a list of the call signs that will be participating.

Announcing DARS D-RATS RAT Reflector

After the positive showing from the d-rats exercise last Thursday, I’m pleased to announce that we now have our own DRATS RAT Reflector. A big thank you goes out to VE7CQF (Curtis) who setup and is hosting the reflector through his server and to Chris (VE7QCS) and Bill (VE7IKX) for some technical assistance along the way.

The links are on the last page for downloading the software and setup for RF use.

The other night most of you indicated you would like to learn more about d-rats. If you would be interested in doing some exercises from home send me the call sign you will be using for d-rats. I will then send it to all those who said they would participate so they can add you into their email access (this is explained in the attached manual.)

Over the course of the next few days we will link the rat reflector to VA7DEP. This means although you might be using the internet your usage of DRATS will also be RF’d out on 145.760 simplex. Like wise if you use RF and can hit DEP you will be repeated through the reflector.

Now I would ask that you NOT broadcast the rat reflector address to the wide wide world. It is intended to train our members on d-rats and in time of need we have it for our use. That is not to say if you have a friend from around here who would be interested that would be OK. I just don’t want a bunch of people who we don’t have a clue to who they are using it.

Please give it a go and as a starter feel free to either chat with me or send me an email. I will leave my d-rats running as much as possible. I didn’t explain it in the manual but in the bottom right corner of the screen you can set your status to whether you are at the keyboard ready to chat or your unattended and other person will get no response from you. Email if you have any questions.

Enjoy
Gord

I would like to thank the roughly 20 members who attended the DRATS exercise last night. We had a total of 4 RF stations working the exercise. It was good to see everyone trying the exercises. I have attached the pdf file of the exercise as many of you asked for a copy. From the debrief last night most of you would like to try this from home. We will look into setting up our own ratreflector for you to practise and enjoy. PDF file at the end.

Have a good week everyone and don’t forget the AGM next Thursday.

Hi Everyone:
Tonights meeting is in Tsawwassen. We will be having our DRATS exercise tonight. Hopefully you can all attend and take a turn at playing with this program. DARS News Notes

******************************
Jay VA7CDQ now VA6CDQ says to say hello to everyone. Just as I started this news notes he popped up on the SUN UHF DSTAR repeater. It sounds like he is planting roots in Edmonton. He is looking to buy a house and acreage just outside of Edmonton. Knowing Jay, can an antenna farm be in the future. For those of you who remember his porcupine antenna truck he now has 7 antennas on his vehicle. Only Jay!!!

******************************
Please note: The DRATS exercise has been moved to Feb 13 in Tsawwassen. We were not able to book the large room and that is why we have moved it to The cop shop. We should have 3 different stations running that night.

*****************************
Once again this is membership renewal time. You must be paid up to vote in the upcoming AGM meeting on Feb 20. Were you aware you can pay your dues online using PayPal. www.deltaamateurradio.com

*****************************
The AGM meeting is Feb 20. Voting will take place for: minor change to bylaws & all executive and director positions. Plan on attending that night and have a say on how you want the society to run for 2014.

*****************************
April 1 is the start of our Basic Amateur Radio course. Please spread the word to those interested. All info on the website: www.deltaamateurradio.com

*****************************
We are still in need of an interested party(s) in looking after the Burger & Brew fund raiser in April/May. John will look after the 50/50 license and Bob is going to head up the prize committee. We need somebody to book book the venue and oversee the event. These fund raisers help to keep our membership dues low.

Have a great week everybody
