from Darrel – VE7CUS

We are looking for a few people to insure field day goes off smoothly and we obtain all bonus points possible. Therefore, we need someone to setup and have people to run the GOTA station. A person to send a message to the Section Manager and also copy the ARRL bulletin. A person to make sure we have operators for all stations. Also we need someone with expertise using N1MM logger for the people who will be using it.

****If you can help out email Darrel directly: s-darrth@dccnet.com****

Tsawwassen Meetings
Please keep in mind we are using a police facility. You cannot park in the two police only and ambulance parking stalls. We had an incident last night where an officer could not park in the police only spot. As far as I know those are ticket-able parking lanes so next time, if you get a ticket just go and pay it, considered you have been warned.

Have a good week

From Clays’s K7CR News Notes

Those of us that work in the Broadcast Industry, and especially at transmitter locations, have a lot of words and terms that are used for something completely different on the ‘outside’. Here are some examples that come to mind:
Drive – Something that goes into an Amplifier – vs. that letter ‘D’ on your cars shift lever.
Bias – A voltage used in RF Amplifiers – vs. something to do with equality.
Hybrid – A device used to split or combine RF energy – vs. a vehicle that uses gas and batteries.
Cavity – A type of filter used with RF energy – vs. something you pay your dentist to repair.
Filter – A device that passes certain frequencies- vs. something you put in your coffee maker.
Dehydrator – A device for creating dry compressed air – vs. something used to dry out food.
Manometer – A device for measuring pressure difference – vs ….(Not sure I want to go there.)
Racks – Device for holding equipment – vs (More slippery slope.)
Transmission Line – A device for moving radio frequency energy to various locations within a
transmitter plant – vs the device that moves coolant from your cars transmission to the radiator.
UPS – Uninterruptable Power Supply – vs. a competitor to FedEx.
Coax – Short for Coaxial Cable – vs. to urge.
Tuning – Adjusting a transmitters performance – vs. something you do to a musical instrument.
Propagation – Radio waves in space – vs. making more creatures.
Level – The amplitude of a signal – vs. something to determine whether something is the same
distance from the earth at both ends.
For those of you that still work with, or remember, Vacuum Tubes –
Plate – Anode of a vacuum tube – vs. something you eat off of.
Grid – Control device in a vacuum tube – vs. something that goes wrong when the lights go out.
Screen – An element within a Tube – vs. something to keep out insects.
And the list goes on – (Got an addition – let me know.)

A note from Ken, VE7BC

Hello,

The New Westminster Hyack International Parade is on Saturday May 24. Operators assigned to the assembly area and parade officials will start communications at 08:00 and those assigned to points along the parade route will start a little later. The event starts at 10:30 with the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team and the parade follows. We are usually all done by around 13:00.

I am in need of about 25 operators. Assignments will include such things as assembly area, judging, shuttle buses, police, with various Hyack and parade officials, P.A. announcer, dispersal etc. The parade committee also counts on us for communication at many of the intersections along the parade route and would appreciate any help we can provide with the actual manning of the traffic barricades.

Please let me know whether you will able to help. May 24 is only 4 weeks away. I know how much the Hyack Association appreciates our services.

HELP PLEASE! – FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT POSSIBLY BE INTERESTED IN JOINING US. ANNOUNCEMENTS ON NETS, CLUB MEETINGS, NEWSLETTERS, WEBSITES ETC. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

As always, new hams are very welcome. No experience is necessary, we can certainly buddy up any brand new hams with an experienced operator. All that is required is a 2 metre handheld (and hopefully a spare battery!)

I will of course supply further details as the event draws closer.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Ken Clarke

A note from Don VA7IQ

I’m looking for a PCMCIA card supporting WPA Wifi (any speed) that is looking for a new home. This is obsolete equipment, and not many folks have a use for these except for using with really old laptops. If there is one looking for a good home, there is a elderly laptop waiting to meet it. 😉

A second item: Does anyone have a surplus stick of 256MB DDR266 CL2.5 184pin memory this would most certainly help this elderly computer avoid Alzheimer’s.

Thanks, Don

If you can help Don out his email address is: va7iq@rac.ca and please note Don does not have old laptops only elderly ones with healthcare issues.
