Walter Melvyn Hendrickson VE7BGJ

Born – June 30 , 1940 ~ Died June 6 , 2025 at 84 years.

Walter was a unique character. He was born blind and later life became hard of hearing. Yet he was an engaging member of the amateur radio community. He was able to overcome his challenges to operate his radio equipment as demonstrated by him being a superb CW operator and participated in regular CW nets. He was heard on voice every day on the Rainbow Country Net as one of the most regular participants where he regularly shared his life experiences. Walter was known to monitor 146.58 MHz FM simplex which was known as Walter’s frequency. It was not unusual for Walter to be a new hams first QSO.

Walter was able to read email by through a text-to-Morse converter. He attended most amateur events in the lower mainland almost always with Lou VE7CGE providing transportation. Walter was also a regular at the SPARC radio museum with his friend Lou VE7CGE. He also attended the weekly Thursday coffee gathering at Fresgo. Walter’s knowledge of radio was surpassed by his knowledge of old cars and how engines work.

Walter lived with his parents before moving in with Neil VE7NH, who looked after him. Walter followed Neil in several moves from Burnaby, to Delta and eventually to live in Chilliwack. Walter was a prominent attendee at our North Delta gatherings before he moved out to Chilliwack. He was a significant member of “Team CW” at Field Day. His unique style of operating CW gave everyone listening extra CW practice as every contact was an extended QSO with Walter repeating everything he heard. He will be missed.
