Jason Rickerby VE7XD/VE7JMR

Jason spent his early years in England before moving with his parents to live in Delta, BC. He attended Sunshine Hills Elementary school, Seaquam Secondary school, and 2 years of Simon Fraser University. It became clear to him that a programmer was not what he wanted to do with computers. As a result, he transferred to BCIT but networking and building larger networks was in its infancy and there was no one teaching it.

Initially, Jason worked at London Drugs in the computer department and through contacts made, he moved to QLT, a pharmaceutical company, where he helped build the network infrastructure. From there he moved on to Inex Pharmaceuticals, then to a consulting company Pacific Coast Information Systems. After that he joined CHC at Vancouver Airport before moving to West Fraser. Jason never graduated post-secondary and was self-taught in his networking skills.

Jason became passionate about radio as a youth while his father, Peter, was working at BC Tel and would come home with a van full of radio test equipment for Jason to play with. He was active in Delta ARS as a long-time director and the Municipal Emergency Radio Coordinator with the City of Delta. He was regularly active on the monthly Provincial Regional Emergency Operation Centre check-ins. He enjoyed operating digital modes off grid with solar power during field day and applied his data networking skills to deploy the wireless network used for logging.

Jason has several legacies which we remember him by. He created the USB-memory drive which is carried by all emergency program volunteers containing the software and essential emergency information. He donated the VE7SUN VHF repeater operating from the North Delta Recreation Centre. Jason is succeeded by his son, Avery, who continues as a member of the club.

Jason was remembered by club members at the meeting on April 11, 2024. View here…
