Thursday November 14 Meeting

Hi Everyone:

The meeting tomorrow night is at NDPSB at 7pm. We will be using the back half of the large room. Michel Latendresse will be our guest speaker tomorrow night, his agenda per VE7WLF is:

November 14, Michel Latendresse, Emergency Program Coordinator will be a guest speaker. Michel will outline the purpose of having the Community Emergency Coordination Centres (CECC) in the fire halls. He also would like to touch on Damage Assessment and the role of amateurs in emergencies.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

***Advanced Radio Course***

Hi Everyone:

We have had a couple of outside enquiries regarding when our next Advanced Radio Course will be held. If you would be interested in upgrading your license to advanced can you please email me: gdick@telus.net

Emailing back that your interested does not lock you into anything. At this point in time we are trying to find out if there is enough interest to present the course. No dates have been set but if we move forward with the course and all the ducks line up in a row we are looking at early/mid April 2014. No prices have been set yet, but I assume we will be close to last time. $125 with an early bird special of $90.

Before saying yes, please take a couple of minutes and read the course description on the website: www.deltaamateurradio.com courses>advanced. Unlike the basic course where memorization can gain you a very good score, the advanced course will require you know and understand the topics.

Any questions feel free to email me.

Shake Out BC October 17, 2013

VA7SJT VE7QCSshakeOutMembers of Delta ARS deployed to various facilities to support Shake Out BC 2013.

We have participated in the past, but this year we activated the amateur stations in Fire Halls 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7. In times of emergency, the Fire Halls will become Community Emergency Coordination Centres (CECC). Also VA7DEP was operational from the Public Safety Building and VA7DCH at City Hall.

The following Delta ARS members manned these stations:

Hall 1 Rand VE7HRA
Don VA7IQ
Hall 2 John VE7JNH
Oz VE7OSK
Hall 5 Tom VE7DID
Chris VE7QCS
Stewart VA7SJT
Hall 6 Dave VE7PKE
Hall 7 Mark VE7CLX
Larry VE7CFF
Public Safety Building
VA7DEP
Barry VE7WIT
City Hall
VA7DCH
Doug VE7WLF
Darrel VE7CUS

VE7DID VE7QCSIn addition to the 13 members at facilities, check-ins were received from Jeanne VA7QLT, Johann VA7CRE, Ralph VE7XF, Walter VE7BGJ, Gordon VE7FKY and Curtis VE7CQF. In the “interested amateur” category, David VE7EPP was mobile and Ralph VE7OM was at YVR airport. The long distance check-in goes to Ed VE7AFC in Murrayville, east of Langley.

Shake out BC was a good opportunity to exercise and radios and people. As a path test, we know we can talk to all CECC stations via a repeater and on simplex.

Thank you to all who participated and especially to Darrel who had to jump in early when my voice gave out!

DARS News Notes

*********************
ComFest is a little over a week away now. We have a couple of tables left if your still thinking that you might like to clear some of those old treasures to make room for new treasures from the shack. I would encourage all members to come to ComFest and have a look around and see all the hard work that many members have put into this event. Come early and have a pancake breakfast served up by the Tsawwassen Lions. Whether your a visitor, worker or vendor this promises to be a fun filled day. Sunday September 29, South Delta Rec. Center. Breakfast starts shortly after 8, vendors allowed to setup around 9:30 and doors open to the public at 10:00 Admission to public is $5.00

Mark Oct 17 on your calendars. Most of you have heard the term SDR or Software Defined Radio, but do you really know what it is all about? Dave, VE7PKE will be presenting and introduction to SDR, what it is all about, how does it work etc. Come and hear what is all about and bring your questions.

*********************
As many of you know, Dave (VE7PKE) has designed an SDR radio and this radio is now in production and ready for purchase. It was suggested at last nights meeting if we could have a member group purchase and build this radio at our Tsawwassen meetings. If you are interested, you should attend the Oct 17 meeting to find out more. If you would like to see this radio in action, Dave will be at ComFest with a working radio. If you can’t wait for Oct 17 or ComFest here’s a couple of links to get you started.

For those who missed the meeting last night, you missed some great discussion on:
Is the internet really part of amateur radio or are us older hams just being left behind in the wake of new technology!
Has the distracted drivers law anything to do with why the repeaters are becoming silent
Why don’t we hear new hams on the airwaves.
I encourage you to come out to a meeting and add your opinion into the mix.

Basic Amateur Radio course starts November 5, 2013. Let interested people know about it and to check our website: www.deltaamateurradio.com Look for courses>basic in the blue menu at the top.

A couple of QSL cards have arrived dealing with the Harris Barn event. Appears this event created more interest then first anticipated. I checked global qsl this morning and the European and Japanese qsl cards have been printed and forwarded onto the local bureaus.
